Muted Group

Muted Group Theory was created by Edwin and Shirley Ardener. ''Muted Group Theory (MGT) proposes that our language system influences, and often limits, our ability to represent our
experiences.'' I believe this is one of the most important theory of all the ones covered in class, because without communication and expressing what we feel how can people understand waht we believe? Sometimes women criticize the deafness of men, but sometimes i think that dont aks themselves why is this a problem and where is the issue?..Many women rather stay silcence (muted) and dont express their concerns and problems to their partners and then have as an outcome the distractions of their partners.

Social Penetration Theory

Social Penetration Theory, was created by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor in 1973.

"Social penetration refers to the process of relationship bonding whereby individuals move from superficial communication to more intimate communication." Self-disclosure refers to the process of revealing information about oneself to others.Nonintimate relationships typically progress to an intimate level because of self-disclosure. Self-disclosure can be either strategic (planned) or nonstrategic (spontaneous). This theory is quite common in everyday life, specially when you are meeting someone newMany times I usually try to  to reveal the basics about me; where I'm from, my age, what I study. But I've been in positions where I have met people who come to exceed the limit of confidence. For example, they ask personal or intimate things.  I have also been in the situation where I meet someone and in a fraction of half an hour they reveal their life's from a to z. Revealing too much can cause also that in further situation you can become isolated because nobody would want to stay in touch with you.

Social Exchange Theory

Social Exchange Theory, was created by Thibault, J.W & Kelley, H.H in 1952. The main focus of the theory are Cost, Reward and Resources. Cost means the negative value to a person (time, energy, stress). Rewards- means the opposite, the positive value to a person (attention, fun, happy moments). We all know that positive relationships are those which bring happiness, and negative are the ones that bring concerns; like for example costs.  This theory is something that every human being is inconstant struggling with. Everyone is seeking for happiness, pleasure and good moments (rewards). So in every society this is common to be found. Another thing is what its viewed as reward to a person could be viewed as cost for another one. due to the fact that each individual is different, and have different goals, not everything means the same to all.

Groupthink Theory

Groupthink theory was created by Irving Janis in 1972. It is defined as " a way of deliberating that group members use when their desire for unanimity overrides their motivation to asses all available plans of action". This theory relates to many groups, for example every time I have a group presentation sometimes there is lack of impartial leadership and usually all the groups members suffer from stress; that everything is in order clear and coherent to the class and the teacher. Usually what groups should avoid is examine advantages and disadvantages, get together practice, and incorporate everyones idea to the presentation.

Media Ecology Theory

Created by Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980).  The main focus of the theory is to create a symbiotic relationship with mediated technology. The theory also believes that we create technology and technology re- creates who we are and how we view media as an environment. Knowadays society has created a strech relationship with technology. We depend on celphones, computers to make our daily lives much easier.

Agenda Setting Theory

This theory was created by Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw, in 1972. The theory is based on the media, the theory claims that they are the ones in charge to that tell us what to think. According to the theory they also tell us us what to do about it.“ This impact of the mass media- the ability to effect cognitive change among individuals, to structure their thinking- has been labeled the agenda-setting function of mass communication. Here may lie  the most important effect of mass communication, its ability to mentally order and organize our world for us. In short, the mass media may not be successful in telling us what to think, but they are stunningly successful in telling us what to think about.” For example I tend to research in depth about a topic instead of just guiding trough what the media says. Sometimes they transform information according to what they want to stay, and according to what they want people to believe in. For example in Venezuela the media is controlled by the government and obviously they don't want to show what its really happening in the country. So the media there tries to control what there followers think and believe in.

Spiral of Silence Theory (SST)

Created by Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann. The theory consists of people who believe they hold a minority viewpoint on a public issue, will tend to remain in the background; and those who believe they hold a majority viewpoint, will tend become more encouraged to speak. This issue is  typically common, for example in the gay society. If they feel they are a minority they will try to stay in the back and don't speak up for their rights. In the case were they feel supported and feel that they are the majority, they tend to speak up. This theory is common for every matter. Usually when I don't feel I am a majority I tend to get in the back. Once i was in class where everyone agreed that the use of drugs should be legalized, and I was part of the minority who believed that if the legalized it will have worts outcomes. So, I decided not to give my opinion.
